What Marathons Teach Us About Life

Image
The marathon is a harsh teacher, dishing out those vital life lessons we still need to learn. Your result tells a story. Everything—your training, race strategy,  pain tolerance , the weather—distils into that neon number ticking away as you cross the finish line. For some, it signifies absolute joy, others disappointment. Regardless, a curious phenomenon kicks in shortly after completing a marathon. Everyone second guesses their result, believing their posted time does not accurately reflect their true potential. If only I had… As for me, I got the time I deserved, melting across the line in 03 hours 40 minutes 08 seconds, good for 812th overall (just off the podium), 100th for my age group, and a respectable third among the Dustins. WTF? That’s fantastic. It is not.  For background, last December, a friend asked me to race the 2022 BMO Vancouver Marathon. Barely running and twelve years out from my last one, I stupidly agreed. Further, I then ignored Haruki Mura...

How to overcome the fear of being alone

Image
If you’re anything like me and grew up with siblings, you always had someone around to spend time with. You were rarely alone, and even the thought of doing something by yourself is out of this world. While some people may fear loneliness in a  romantic sense , I’ve always feared it on a different level. Growing up, I always had a sister that would tag along for everything. Errands, ice cream, and even a simple drive to nowhere. In fact, I was the person that refused to go somewhere if I didn’t have company. I know, it’s a bit extreme. But ever since we’ve entered adulthood, I’ve noticed my friends, my sister, and even I don’t have as much free time anymore. I don’t always have someone to run errands or get ice cream with. And let me tell you, that’s been hard. But, I’m slowly overcoming it. And you can too. How to overcome your fear of being alone The best way to overcome a fear, in my opinion, is  exposure therapy . The best way to overcome your fear of being alone is by...

Love Languages and What They Can Do For Your Relationship

Image
There’s a good chance you and your spouse don’t know what your love languages are and they may be the same, but chances are they are different. Having different love languages is not a bad thing, it can be a great thing if you know how to appease each other's love language, support them, and utilize them every day in your relationship. What Are the Five Love Languages? Words of affirmation:  If this is your primary love language, you are someone who enjoys getting complimented, whether written or spoken. If you want to make your partner’s day bright, a simple text message telling them how much you appreciate them, or how proud you are of them, will do it. Quality time: If this is your primary love language you crave affection through your partner's undivided attention. Making an effort to spend uninterrupted time with your partner is the way to feed this love language. Physical touch: If this is your love language then you want to receive a physical touch from your partne...

This could be anything from a giant gingerbread man to a mischievous elf to a goofy snowman. Just pick a character that fits your family's sense of humor, and have fun coming up with creative ways to incorporate them into your holiday activities. Christmas Tradition Idea #2: Have a family ugly sweater compe...

Fun Self-care Activities For Adults Kissing in the rain - I would 100% recommend this to everyone. My boyfriend and I kissed in the rain the first night he was here to visit me last year, and I think I can speak for both of us when I say it was absolutely amazing. There's something different about kissing in the rain that makes is more enjoyable than regular kissing. You see it in movies all the time, it's definitely almost, if not as magical as it looks. Going on a cruise/large boat for the evening - Him and I went on the Sprit of Ethan Allen sunset cruise (which is a cruise at dusk that goes around Lake Champlain in Canada which the lake is in-between us and it was amazing. We both had so much fun. We got a chance to be alone and really romantic all night long, as well so watching the sunset over the water. It was almost a scene straight out of a movie (*cough, cough* Titanic). Breakfast dates - Yes, you have to get up early, but I think it definitely pays off. Whether you m...

Biggest Red Flags in a New Relationship

Image
The biggest red flags in a new relationship New relationships are scary. You're constantly wondering if you're saying and doing the right thing. But, what about the other person? Sometimes, your lust for the other individual can cloud your judgment and make you ignore red flags.  If you want to prevent a disaster and catch the signs they aren’t the one, here’s a list of what I consider to be the  biggest red flags  in a new relationship. 1. Love bombing Love bombing is a type of manipulation where someone overwhelms you with loving actions, behavior, and words. Often, it is used to make you trust this person and fall for them quickly.  However, not all love bombing is manipulation. Some people move too fast and express themselves too quickly, which can be perceived as love bombing. If you suspect the person just moves too quickly and lets their lust drive them, have a chat. Slow things down.  But if you do think you’re being manip...
